Building Blocks of a Strong Relationship

It was always made clear to me that a relationship relies on both individuals simultaneously striving towards the mutual goals set forth by both sides. Realistically, the main objective of a romantic bond between two people is based on the building blocks of faith, appreciation, empathy, and trust.

Faith

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

First, faith plays a crucial role for when there are bumps in the road. At some point in every relationship, both sides will be faced with challenges. For survival, both partners must continue to have faith that their love for each other will prevail and overcome the obstacles. This faith will help with short-term roadblocks and also prepare couples on how to deal with obstacles in the future.

Appreciation

“I think for any relationship to be successful, there needs to be loving communication, appreciation, and understanding.”

-Miranda Kerr

All in all, most of us can agree that couples feel more comfortable when they believe their significant other can see their point of view. Life, in particular relationships, would be very colorless if both people thought and acted the same way. That being said, appreciation stands for the accepting, respecting, and celebrating of the different gifts and feelings of both sides.

Empathy

“Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you.”

-Walter Winchell

Through empathy, that special bond between two people can begin to build. Every relationship, not just romantic, allows us to learn something, by creating positive interaction with other people’s feelings and needs. One way couples can do this is to not blame, give advice, or fix the situation, but relate to each other’s emotions in a positive way.

Trust

“The best proof of love is trust.”

-Joyce Brothers

Trust is the most important building block in a relationship. Couples may struggle with this key component but this doesn’t mean that it’s not there. Jealously may sometimes arise and in certain situations could give off negative energy. Although this may lead to an argument or a feeling of distrust, there is always a deeper meaning. Talk with one another to figure out that middle ground in which both sides of the relationship can exist in a healthy manner. Get curious about what makes the other person jealous and then work together to come up with ways to minimize that jealousy. Through time and patience, couples can further develop this trust allowing them to take the footsteps of upward growth.

Unity

“Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

-Mattie Stepanek

Through learning to contribute the building blocks of faith, compassion, empathy, and trust to a relationship, a couple can start to feel a holistic view of each other. One can argue that when using the values, actions, and emotions, of both sides, two people can truly feel as though they are in complete unity with one another.
